Prednisone Side Effects
Most of the side effects of medicines are not reported or monitored. You should always follow your physician’s advice before consuming or stopping any medicines. Though many medicines have side effects but those affecting you might be less.
Prednisone are commonly used to treat inflammatory illness and also prescribed to some cancer patients. It is even used for diseases like asthma, chronic inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Though medicines tend to cure our illness we must be aware that medicines have side effects on our body.
For treating Herxheimer reaction, Prednisone is used, common observed during the treatment of syphilis. It is also used to delay the symptoms of Uveitis and Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Sarcoidosis and lupus are also treated using the same medicines.
The most common Prednisone side effects include :
1. Insomnia
2. High Blood Glucose Levels(Diabetic patients are known to be severely affected)
3. Euphory
4. Depression
5. Anxiety
6. Cushing's syndrome
Such side-effects can be bifurcated between minor and major side-effects.
Minor side effects :
1. Acne

4. Hyperactivity
5. Increased appetite
6. Leg pain/cramps
7. Nervousness
8. Rashes
9. Removes intestinal flora
10. Sensitive teeth
Major side effects :
1. Abdominal pain
2. Anxiety
3. Avascular necrosis
4. Black stool
5. Blurred vision
6. Cataracts or glaucoma
7. Depression, mania, psychosis, or other psychiatric symptoms
8. Difficulty controlling emotion
9. Difficulty in maintaining train of thought
10. Facial swelling
11. Hepatic steatosis
12. Increased blood sugar for diabetics
13. Infections
14. Insomnia
15. Long-term migraines
16. Mental confusion / indecisiveness
17. Mouth sores or dry mouth
18. Osteonecrosis
19. Painful hips or shoulders
20. Peptic ulcer
21. Severe joint pain
22. Severe swelling
23. Steroid-induced osteoporosis
24. Stomach pain or bloating
25. Stretch marks
26. Unusual fatigue or weakness
27. Weight gain
Even prolonged uses of Prednisone has its side-effects the body loses its ability to create corticosteroids, which would kept you dependent on this medicine. The side effects on this drug are so complicated that even withdrawing from the usage has adverse side effects on the body.
Purple stretch marks on body & Cataract are other common Prednisone side effects. Several allergies, menstrual irregularities and vomiting are also the side effects.
Side effects on Children
As mentioned earlier, body gets dependent on the medicine if consumed for long. You don’t want your child to be dependent on some medicine at such young age. If you stop consuming the medicine worrying about the side effects, the withdrawal should be gradual and not immediate, as immediate withdrawal would leave other side-effects of the medicines.
Side effects on Pregnant Women
As per known facts, it is observed that women who consumed this medicine during the first three months of pregnancy their children are risk of cleft palate or cleft lip. Pregnant women undergoing on corticosteroid therapy, it is advisable not to stop it intake as Prednisone side effects are not too risky when compared to corticosteroid therapy.

It is highly advisable to avoid consuming this medicine but if required do it only after consulting your family physician. Also, better be aware of all the side effects of this drug before agreeing to consume the medicine.
